I do intend to direct-drive the piston.

Years ago I disassembled a commercial compressor pump that did this with a
single phase motor. (Now, only if I could remember why I was taking it
apart... I think it was because it had developed a crack in the housing of
the cylinder body casting... that bodes well for my scheme)

I would like to think if the load and vibration is small enough, that one
might be able to get away with direct drive. I might be proven wrong.
