My flashybrid package, in Debian unstable, pretty much automates running
Debian from a read-only flash card, including putting all the necessary
stuff in a ramdisk, and rsyncing it back to flash at shutdown. It also
allows you to store some directories (such as /usr/share/doc/) on a hard
disk, which is kept powered off most of the time, if your flash is
small. I've used it with a 32 mb flash and a hard disk, and with a 256
mb flash with no hard disk, over a period of two and a half years.
