I think the Ximeta's Netdisk idea pretty much sucks. It is nice for consumers because there is zero configuration with their 'raw' protocol, but they make their traffic unroutable (and who would buy that thing and not have a DHCP server somewhere in their house today?). Looks like they woke up one day and decided that all of the work that went into iSCSI wasn't good enough and they needed to invent something new! USR recently introduced a NAS product called the USR8200. It's actually a firewall, router, NAS, and kitchen sink all in one box. The NAS part let's you hook up any external disk via USB/FW. I haven't tested this thing or seen any performance numbers, but since it's just a Intel IXP422 w/ Linux, it should be plenty fast enough for the HD1000.
