Crestron is a company that makes a bunch of automation hardware from control
processors, remotes, touchpads, lights, even HVAC controls. The equipment is
very high quality. A single crestron processor can be used to control
devices including touchpads. You can also network a bunch of Crestron
processors together to have a distributed control system. The problem with
Crestron is that it is expensive and uses a proprietary network protocol
called cresnet for most of its "network" based serial control. So a 15
touchpanel will run you $11k vs $2-3k for a in wall PC.

What would be a good example of a product with this type of control ?  I'm
curious where Crestron fits in with all this

Yes I know about ecp but screen scrapping is not my idea of a protocol and
the majority of home integrators are not up to the task of scripting a Linux
box via telnet. If they were we would have had the Jetson home last century.
