Karl, It depends on what your developers and visual designers want to work with. Forget us and what we like/want. If your developers want more literal documentation of the page states then do what is easier for them to read and understand (which might require wireframing out each state change of the page). Remember, they are the primary audience for wireframe documentation... Another alternative which is the less literal approach (and I'm not sure if this appropriate for your context but it worked for me at one point in time with a certain product. I'm not sure if what is changing on the page can be grouped into modules... If it can then you could describe the different states of a module, diagram out each module, and assign each one a code/naming schema. Then you can do a page wireframe that simply shows the location of the modules on the page. Corresponding to that is some sort of chart or list of what all the variations of the modules on the page could be based on what each state change demands. Think of it like a 3 puzzles that are all cut the same way but they have different pictures on them. So a piece will always go into the same spot on all 3 puzzles but whether the color and pattern of the puzzle piece will change (I hope that wasn't a terrible analogy). Anyway, that is one possible approach if your page could be chunked out into modules of content/functionality. Good luck and remember the audience for your documentation! I know when some folks at viant were designing sputnik (a music video interface with one page but lots of states), they used state diagrams. Anyone else have any examples or ideas?
