Re: Can XD survive the hype?

It may be that a few firms contest ownership of the label, but DOD and
especially Air Force situation awareness R&D -- experience design by any
other name -- preceded them all and continues to break new ground,

It's not necessarily useful for selling washing machines or health care
happiness, but in terms of theoretical quality (and gunnery practice), this
work is unexcelled. The situation-awareness corpus of work is available to
XD practitioners who require quality basic research and testing of solutions
dealing with perception, cognition, and behavior.

Popular success in commercial markets (in all fields) often requires dumbing
down of profound knowledge to sound bytes and magazine headlines. Imagine a
design firm that worked on the level of high theory, its practice guided by
high theory (instead of expediency) -- in a sense, elevating experience
design from the commonplace, where everything is XD, to the irrefutable
sublime where only the best qualifies. Yes, this is abstract, but popular
acclaim is virtual, too.

 Bob
