Hi Derick - I thought I'd take a stab at defining Experience Design in one sentence for you. It's very new and very exciting. The discipline of designing experiences from an emotional end-frame that encompass the complete life-cycle of a product or service in order to create deeper, more meaningful connections with customers, employees, stakeholders, parters etc. that drive preference and loyalty. I have been working with Experience Engineering as their Experience Designer for a year and a half and am taking a brief sabbatical to get settled in our new home in Mass. Does this help??? Sorry, I know that I¹m waaaay behind in my reading, but I just ran across this and wanted to respond right away! David Kelly may have said that, but it was actually first published in a Harvard Business Review article called ³The Experience Economy² by Pine & Gilmore and it came out in 1998. They used the four examples, starting with agricultural and moving to experience. I have a copies of the original article from the HBR if anyone would like to see it and we have additional resources on brand experiences and experience design at http://brandexperiencelab.org/expand.html. We¹re always looking for additional resources for our site and our blog, so feel free to pass things along if you think they would be of interest. Anyway, just trying to do my small part to further the cause of creating great experiences! David _________________________________ David B. Question: > please define experience design in one sentence. i have heard enough > of why it cannot be done, so none of that please. is anyone up to it? > Answer: From David Kelley of IDEO: Homemade cake versus Chuck E. Cheese... a. In an agricultural economy, flour, eggs, sugar, etc. are the "raw" materials you need to prepare a cake and then you bake it. b. In a productized economy, you go to the grocery store and buy a box cake from Duncan Hines. Add water and bake it. c. In a service economy, you go to the bakery and pick up the cake. d. In an experience economy, you take the birthday boy or girl to Chuck E. Cheese. They supply the cake, games, photos, entertainment, etc. It's a package. I design for museum exhibitions - probably the field furthest from the digital world and our profession very much consider ourselves to be a designers of "experience." We "exhibitionists" have called it "4-dimensional design" - looking formally or informally at the amount of time and the quality of time people spend with the exhibitions we create as well as with the the people they came with to the exhibitions. There are even a number of researchers in the field measuring the "expereience." The last emailer, David Polinchock has put a wonderful face to it - we strive to engage our audiences in the telling of a good story using whatever media is applicable. On a lighter note, I call it "Design for human beans!" Jennie Zehmer WhorledPeas, Inc. I like "human-centered design," as it allows us other flights of fancy. For instance, the National Zoo has designed this incredible system of high-tension cables and platforms to allow the orangutans to commute from their main living area to the research center they work in each day. It is a groundbreaking example of orangutan-centered design. We can establish sub-fields, and new AIGA mailing lists, for robot-centered design, cat-centered design, reality-TV-contestant-centered design; all devoted to these species' differing cognitive systems, and advancing corresponding best practices and research. It's a brave new world to have such career opportunities in it! What does it mean to "optimize the goals of multiple human perspectives"? How can you optimize a goal? Are we designing people's goals, or the stuff they use to fulfill those goals? ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 5 Date: Wed, 19 May 2004 14:48:12 -0400 From: David Polinchock Subject: American Girl Story in NY Times Since we¹ve been having this discussion about experience design, I thought that I would pass along this story from the Sunday NY Times about the American Girl Place in NYC. They took 30,000 reservations for dinner before they opened! If you want a Saturday dinner reservation and you call today, you have to wait until August! But wait, you say, it¹s not a restaurant, it¹s a doll store! That¹s right, they are the quintessential example of the power of great experience design and a great narrative construction and that allows them to create such a unique and compelling brand experience! And one that meets their business objectives as well! You can read more and get the link for the entire article at our blog at http://experiencemanifesto.blogs.com/experience_manifesto/. As a side note, we¹re doing an experience walking tour of Soho tomorrow, so we went out to do a little prep work today. One of the places that we¹re visiting is just beautiful! Every aspect of the design is sensational. Except, the staff can¹t easily do their jobs transacting business. This is one of the issues that we always discuss experience design is about making sure it works for everyone, not just the designer! David _________________________________ David B.
