Hello!

I'm Andy Schriever, President of Park Street Software.  I'm a bit 
surprised to find myself here...

A good friend of mine, and a talented mathematician, contacted me a 
while ago to describe an approach he'd developed for maintaining and 
efficiently querying Directed Acyclic Graphs in a standard relational 
database.  As many of you will appreciate this is a really valuable 
capability -- it means one can apply the power of the RDBMS query 
engine to knowledge representation techniques such as semantic 
networks, class and object structures, and hierarchical 
classifications.

I decided to invest some of the resources of my (small) software 
company in the creation of a knowledge modeling product based on his 
technology, and persuaded one of our customers to become the 
product's first user.  As part of the deployment, we created a sample 
application showing how the company's product set might be modeled, 
along with a product catalog system one could use to navigate the 
model.

Though I didn't know it at the time, the product set model and 
catalog system demo implement a faceted classification that 
facilitates navigating and searching the product database.  I've been 
working hard in the last couple of weeks to catch up on relevant 
literature and to understand the state of the art, and in the course 
of my investigations have discovered the world of faceted 
classifications.

By joining the group, I'm hoping to get in touch with some of the 
very best of current thinking about faceted classifications.  As a 
practitioner, I hope I can contribute by sharing my experiences in 
the practical application of faceted classification techniques with 
members of the group.
