Re: iPod no longer recognized on Windows 2000, arg!

Can you take it to a mac and "restore" the firmware, then "update" it from
your PC to something older than 1.2.6 ( I used 1.2.1 ), then "update" it to
1.2.6 from your PC?

I had a strange problem, don't know if it is similar, but here is what
happened ( the .DS_Store and .Trashes on the ipod folders sounds familiar ).
Here was my ( pretty much ) original post:

If it is not already a windows ipod, I don't think the 1.2.6 updater will
"Update" it, I think it will only "Restore" it to 1.2.6. Which does not
work. I have a 10GB, originally Mac ipod. I had "Restored" it to 1.2.1
Windows ipod a while back. Then "Updated" to 1.2.6 Windows ipod a month or
so ago. And it worked fine. But something happened this weekend - I was
using it to transfer large files from a PC to a Mac and something got hosed.

I "Restored" 1.2.6 PC ipod software and it was still hosed. The reason I
"Restored" instead of "Updating", was becasue that was the only option I had
in the Updater. I had to go back and forth between a Mac and PC, using the
Mac to "Restore" my "dead" ipod, then using the PC to "Restore" it back to a
PC ipod.

The only thing I noticed that worked was to "Restore" it with a Mac ( only
because it was "dead" ). Then "Restore" it on the PC with version 1.2.1 PC
ipod software ( or I am assuming something older than 1.2.6 will work ),
then "Update" to 1.2.6 on the PC. That worked great. ( Although you may be
able to "Restore" a dead ipod with an older windows version of the updater?
I don't know about that maybe someone else can speak to it ).

Then add all my songs and everything works fine today. I did this about a
month ago.

when looking at the violation of the iPod, it tells me it can't find the
necessary drivers and a Code 31. ARG!

Yet when i run the iPod updater and the iPod is plugged in, it stalls for
about 90 seconds, then says it cannot mount it, yet when I run it when the
iPod
isn't plugged in, it just merely states that it isn't plugged in. So
obviously
my computer knows SOMETHING is being plugged in, it's just not working.

So I guess taking it back to the Apple Store and telling them it isn't
working won't help, cause on this end its pretty much my problem and not the
iPod's.
I'm just about finished with bothering everyone about this.
