I'm pretty sure that 1.1 compatibility is no longer a big deal.

JRE 1.1 users can stay with an older release of BeanShell like 1.3. Very
little new code is being written for JRE 1.1 anyway.  If it will help to rip
out all traces of 1.1 compatibility, go for it!

PS Similar compromises have been made for libraries like Swing..
