Welcome to the fourteenth issue of Sprout, the NetBeans monthly newsletter.

The NetBeans IDE 3.5.1 with J2SE 1.4.2 co-bundle is available for download . The co-bundle contains English, Chinese and Japanese versions of the NetBeans IDE 3.5.1. Find out in this issue how to get involved in localization efforts.

In the month of August the following module was added to the NetBeans Module Catalogue:

Clover Integration - Java Tools

Clover is a Code Coverage Tool For Java. It provides insight into which parts of your code are being tested adequately, and which parts are not. The Clover NetBeans Module allows developers to measure and view Aggregate and Source level Code Coverage results directly within NetBeans. The developer can seamlessly switch Clover Coverage measurement on, record coverage for the execution of unit tests, and then view Coverage results directly, all without leaving the IDE. It is currently in beta.

Systinet updates WASP developer tool - Web Services

The new release, WASP Developer 4.6, includes support for
the OASIS-published Web Services Security (WS-S) standard
for message-level security. It also supports SOAP 1.2,
SOAP with attachments and Java Web services APIs, including
JAX-RPC, JAXM and SAAJ. WASP Developer 4.6 is available for
the latest edition of NetBeans and is available for free on the Systinet Web site .

MC4J - The MC4J Management Console software allows for remote connections to JMX servers and provides the ability to browse existing managed beans (MBeans) and execute operations on them. The MC4J JMX Management Console (open source) is built on top of the NetBeans Platform 3.5.

Cortex - Cortex eBusiness is an Australian Solutions Company that specialises in delivering tangible business outcomes through the innovative and pragmatic use of technology. Clover is a code coverage analysis tool and a product of theirs. It discovers sections of code that are not being adequately exercised by your unit tests. Clover reports its findings in multiple formats for easy use by the whole team at the project level down to each line of source code.

Interview with Peter Zavadsky

Recently many NetBeans power users (people who often help newcomers on nbusers mailing list, try fresh Q-Builds etc.) discovered the ongoing window system rewrite. We took a brief interview about it with one of the developers who are busy on the topic, Peter Zavadsky. Why Peter? Why is he working on the rewrite while there're lots of other possible places of NB improvement and other developers?

It's easy, because he is the right one! Peter was born in 1972 in the beautiful city of Trencin, located in Vah's (Dunaj tributary) valley in Slovakia. He had a wide programming experience ranging from simple DB querying to complex DB systems to C/C++ GUIs before he got into Java in 1999, and not some simple Java applets mind you but right into the modern IDE development at NetBeans.

Peter has many hobbies. To name a few: swimming, playing chess, going to the cinema and others. He likes soups, and if you don't, maybe you can't cook them right, so come to Peter's place and see how to cook, serve and eat'em!

When he joined NB he started from writing simple (NetBeans-height simple) modules like ant wrapper and others. Then two years ago he went into the core team and after some (small) amount of time was assigned to window system support, that is, about 1.5 years ago.

As good as Peter is at his job, he is not the only one to work on the rewrite. He works hand in hand with Marek Slama, also a very skilled developer and the UI specification was designed by Jan Rojcek, one of the best netbeans.org HIEs. To complete the team it is necessary to mention Tim Boudreau and Dafe Simonek, both were doing the new UI skin.

The NetBeans IDE 3.5.1 Chinese Release - The NetBeans.org open source project announced the availability of the NetBeans IDE 3.5.1 Chinese Release. The NetBeans IDE is currently available in Chinese, English, Japanese, French and Russian.

Web Apps Mini-Tutorials for the NetBeans IDE - The topics covered in these 7 mini-tutorials include: web module group, page directives, scope, scripting elements, custom tag library, HTTP sessions, front controller servlet, composite view, the use of the IDE's HTTP monitor, and more.

Future of Web Services Expert(s): Roman Stanek - "I was the founder of NetBeans, which started out as garage operation in the Czech Republic, soon after the fall of communism, and went on to be acquired by Sun as a strategic part of Sun ONE. Small companies like this succeed because they come to market quickly with innovative technology, and continue to innovate to stay ahead of competitors."

Growing Momentum Of Linux Projects On java.net — The Source For Java Techonology Collaboration. Since it's launch in June 2003, java.net has gained over 16,000 registered users, initiated over 460 projects including. Located at http://java.net , the site has added over 15 Java communities including NetBeans as a federated pre-existing community.

Localization Efforts

To the left is the localization teams' icon. It is smaller than the rest of the images in Sprout but by no means does this reflect their importance. Their efforts are continously helping to draw more attention and users to NetBeans.

Recently there have been inquiries from people who would like to help NetBeans by either translating the IDE itself or content from the web site.

There are current efforts underway for Chinese, Japanese, French, Russian, Portuguese with interest in German and Greek among others. There is currently a section of the NetBeans web site that is dedicated to localization efforts; http://translatedfiles.netbeans.org/ .

If you are interested in joining a current effort please contact [email protected] in addition to the main mailing list of [email protected] where there will be the support to get you started.

The more people who know about NetBeans, the better it is for the IDE and the project. Let's get active!

SunNetwork 2003 Conference and Pavilion

NetBeans will be at the SunNetwork Conference (SNC) in San Francisco September 16-18. Of the 150 Technical session, NetBeans will be in two session Tracks, as follow:
