NetBeans Weekly News, a newsletter for the NetBeans community Issue #31 - September 3, 2001 URL: <http://www.netbeans.org/newsletter/2001-09-03.html> Interested in becoming a newsletter editor ? We're always looking for editors to help out - contact [email protected] Please send news contributions to [email protected] --------------------------------------------------------------------- Builds and releases: ------------------- Excerpts from mail by our release coordinator Petr Hamernik: http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=147382&listName=nbdev "It means that feature freeze for the features listed above will happen on next Friday Sep/7, all other features are frozen today. We should also postpone all other dates in the schedule - so the first beta will be on Sep/12 and Release would be on Oct/24 then (one week later). So, this postpone will give all other developers one more week for bug fixing, which is good I think! <snip/> Branch 'release33' : As discussed on nbdev, nobody complained about postponing making the 'relase33' branch 3 weeks after feature freeze - let's say Sep/28. Is this date ok for everyone? It means that until Sep/28 developers should not integrate NB 3.4 or 4.0 features into trunk. Short notice which might have big impact on building process by Jesse Glick: Should we get rid of the first start? Yes? http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=146439&listName=nbdev --------------------------------------------------------------------- Modules changes --------------- After some discussion it was agreed that the Ant module in NetBeans 3.3 will use newer version of ant (Ant 1.4). http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=147706&listName=nbdev Object browser is moving from distribution to the auto update center: http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=148790&listName=nbdev New module created for Mila. Lexer module project created: http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=147226&listName=nbdev Looks: Petr Hrebejk has just merged the new implementation of looks from the looks_development branch. Please notice that this API is still under development and that it may and will change in the future. We only plan to use it for the new ObjectBrowser module (called FreestyleBrowser) which will be experimental module in 3.3. We don't plan any other usage of the Looks in 3.3 right now. http://openide.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=146279&listName=dev --------------------------------------------------------------------- Discussions After open sourcing the Database Explorer module there was a discussion how should this project be called. It finally led to the conclusion that the contributed module will stay to be called db while work will start on a new module not called by a two letter abbreviation. http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=147456&listName=nbdev After changing shortcuts by the UI team http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=146318&listName=nbdev there was quite strong concern about the new shortcuts. The shortcuts discussion is still alive on both nbdev and nbui lists. Petr Hrebejk proposed to use XML instead of beaninfo classes. He's got quite warm response to this idea especially from the performance guys. http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=148771&listName=nbdev There was some discussion about creation of new folders. The thread was started by Jano Rojcek on openide-dev http://openide.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=147275&listName=dev Q-build discussions are floating through all the mailing lists - fueled by several interested folks - Emmanuel van der Meulen, Evan Adams, Jan Chalupa and others. See e.g.: http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=148339&listName=nbusers Tools-Options discussion hopefully lead to a conclusion how will this important dialog look like http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=148470&listName=nbui Quite long discussion about new colors is still occupying people on nbui: http://www.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=146712&listName=nbui --------------------------------------------------------------------- This issue of NetBeans Weekly News was brought to you by David Strupl.
