Can I use XTAPI without speakerphone modems?

Hi,
I am writing telephony applications with XTAPI. I use a voice modem but it is not one of the modems which are supported by XTAPI implementation. I added this modem’s command set to xtapi.inf file. But I still have problems about sending sound. Perhaps the problem arises because I do not use a spaekerphone modem. Should the speaker and microphone be directly connected to modem or is it possible to use XTAPI with modems without speakerphone property, which means speaker and microphone are connected to sound card instead of modem?
