Did you look at: http://sablevm.org/wiki/Eclipse ? You need a special startup script to start Eclipse. The "eclipse" binary included in Eclipse tar/zip will not work. Note that Eclipse 3.1 M3 and newer have serious problems with (I think) error handling in SWT->GTK bridge and they might crash occasionally. But using Eclipse 3.1M1 is just fine.
