a subject search in a folder with 6000+ messages which matches 1000+ of those 
messages takes ~4 seconds (wall clock) on my PII 400. of course, this is a 
local maildir, and it has 4.5 times fewer emails than the one you searched 
through, but to inflate 4 seconds to 3-5 minutes is pretty crazy indeed. are 
you using IMAP? i know that kmail's IMAP isn't the best, though hopefully 3.2 
will help address some of those issues (anyone using IMAP w/KMail from HEAD 
on this list?). 

i don't use IMAP myself, primarily because i don't care about accessing my 
mail from anywhere in the world (i have ssh for that =) and i like the speed 
and convenience of local mail storage.
