'Proper' keywords/tags

I have been doing a lot of cleanup. Deleted over 25,000 images. This
freed over 400 Gb. Now it's keywords time.

Some of my keywords/tags are "not clean".

I started with keywords in Lightroom in 2006 v1.2 or v1.3, then I
went through xnview and finally landed in the DK world, since v5.x.

So now, I have the following hierarchical tags:

- animals
  - cats
    - albert
    - chico
    - ...
  - dogs
    - bernie
    - harry
    - ...

On some of the dog images I have the keyword:
    harry
On some other images I have the keywords:
    animals, dogs, harry		(the hierarchy separated by commas)
On some other images I have keywords:
    animals | dogs | harry            (the hierarchy separated by | )

How can I consolidate all the keywords to be either:
    animals, dogs, harry
Or
    animals | dogs | harry

BTW, I was looking at the https://docs.digikam.org/en/ and it's for
8.9.0. Is 8.9.0 coming soon? Yeah!
