Re: Do we release SC or not?

Hi, it's Troy here, aka the branding police...

SC was never intended to be an externally marketed term. It was
supposed to be something we can use to refer to the 'bunch of stuff
that has in common this release engineering artifact where they happen
to be simultaneously released'. What happened was that people simply
read this as 'where-ever you see KDE, write KDE SC' - failure on our
part.

What we want is KDE to be the organization - the people. This has been
worked towards for a while, somewhat successfully in places and less
successfully elsewhere. When we had our marketing sprint, among other
things we decided upon was the new website layout which clearly
defines the product classes that KDE creates: Workspaces, Applications
and a Developer Platform. Nowhere on the site should we be referring
to KDE SC - in fact, 'SC' should not have been picked up in the way
that it did...

So yes, it is ridiculous, but it was due to us failing to clearly
communicate that SC was not supposed to be a drop in term for KDE -
but that we were trying to set ourselves up as a group (KDE) that
creates products (The Development Platform, Plasma Desktop, Plasma
Netbook, KStars, etc...)

So the main products that we release under the normal cycle are the
Plasma Workspaces (encompassing Plasma Desktop, Plasma Netbook, etc...
and refers to kdebase/workspace more-or-less), the Development
Platform (kdelibs, strigi, akonadi, and whatever else is useful for
writing apps with) and finally the KDE Applications (which we can
market individually from the Workspaces, or the Development Platform
and is the reason that all the apps now have their own page on
www.kde.org)

I hope that clarifies things a little, or at least shows what we're
working towards.... I'm happy to answer questions or come up with
use-cases for vocabulary that fits the new scheme if you're having
trouble finding the right wording in places.

p.s.: incidentally, the term SC or "Software Compilation" was the only
part of the Marketing sprint that was design-by-committee - it was the
part we didn't want to be overly visible either, but unfortunately
that ended up being the main message taken from our branding efforts.
A failure on a few fronts as it now causes undue confusion. Let that
be a lesson on design by committee... also, the bikeshed should be
blue.
