default ripping option not paranoid enough

Hi, I have my cd-r drive on a separate IDE cable to my hard disks, yet the default ripping settings in k3b from Debian unstable left me with a substandard rip of a brand new cdda format music cd (the rip contained drop-outs). Once I change the default ripping option to be more paranoid, ripping worked ok even with heavy disk activity. Is there any reason why the default ripping settings go for the "least paranoid" and fastest means of reading a cdda disk rather than being more paranoid or even offering to perform a ripping test?
