Maintaining the compiler is a whole other level than maintaining the JVCL.

The borland internal code and buildprocedures might be really convoluted,
depend on externals (libs and tools) that are not released etc, be under NDA
from MS (.NET!)

One only has to look at the early days of Mozilla to see what could happen.
Where would you get the manpower, specially specialists for
compiler/linker/debugger development)

(p.s. not that I think that there is a remote chance that Borland will open
source it. Even if no external party thinks that they can build a business
model anymore on selling of the shelf development tools, there is still
sufficient value there to sell to a party that integrates the tools in some
own system Apple? Novell?)
