I don't think that the fact that ecb is not compatible with
ec is a problem limited to its use in geant. I already had
to face this problem outside of geant. After trying to
investigate why I could not open in EiffelStudio projects
compiled with ecb and then realizing that they were not
compatible I told myself "OK, let's stop using ecb. If I
need to compile fast and not be able to open the project
in EiffelStudio I better use gec." I do think that the fact
that ecb is not compatible with ec is a serious problem of
ecb. I had rather preferred that ISE devoted time to address
this problem rather than spending time on void-safety.

The reason why I don't like the environment variable is that
it is a all-or-nothing solution. And it's not obvious that
some projects need to be compiled with ec and others with ecb
if the environment variable is set outside of the script.
I'd rather prefer modify the scripts and explicitly state
which projects should compile with which compiler. And in fact
I think that by default it should compile with ec to be compatible
with EiffelStudio. Now that it is clear that ec and ecb are not
compatible, I think that geant should have never been modified
to replace ec by ecb. Or at least ecb should have been invoked
only if the option
"slightly_faster_but_not_compatible_at_all_with_estudio" was
specified.

As a tool that integrated another tool, I'm in favor of
having geant switch back to ec until ecb becomes compatible
with ec. In my opinion using ecb is just asking for troubles
for very little benefit.
