This is leading me to think that your GTK+2 install is somehow
incomplete/broken.  (I've never compiled it manually from source, so am
not exactly sure how to do it.)

What do you get for the output of:

   pkg-config --list-all

Is there a GTK+2.* entry in the list?

After you compile and install a library, are you running ldconfig?  This
could be why wxGTK isn't detecting your GTK2 install.  Also running
ldconfig after installing wx.NET, as Gopal mentioned, is also required.
