Thank you for the suggestion unfortunately it had no effect.  Still the same problem.

I even tried the \ but no luck.

I would just put "/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_logfiles" in ignore.conf It's possible you need to escape the "/"s with a \, but I don't think so.
