The next version of Workrave will have a reading mode. In reading mode, the timers will not stop when you become idle. Timers only stop counting during breaks. The delay can be configured, but not using the preferences GUI. You have to use regedit (on windows) or gconf-editor (on gnome) regedit: CURRENT_USER/Software/Workrave/monitor/idle gconf-editor: apps/workrave/monitor/idle time is in milliseconds. Changing this settings is not recommended and not supported. Values > 30 seconds may cause side-effects... Feel free to try a nightly build to try the reading mode and give feedback.
