Except I found that I could use the contacts for dialing, as long as I was careful never to open one. With the name showing, using the right arrow shows you the various phone numbers and other items stored in the contact, without actually opening the contact. Ah, not four zeros, but 0100 for the first phone number of each contact, 0200 for the second, 0300 for the third... That let me use them, but not open or edit them (a reboot if I tried). I'm not sure either of us had nothing to lose: I'm concerned that the playing with 20090805 may have left corruption in the phone that doesn't get fixed merely by deleting all the contacts.
