I also forgot mentionning the obvious -- your profile might be 
corrupted. While Mozilla isn't running, rename ~/.mozilla/
and start Mozilla to create a fresh new profile with default prefs.

Make sure there are no HTTP_PROXY environment variables...

A command-line run of "env | grep -i proxy" might help.
