weblinks in the thunderbird preview pane

I'm running Thunderbird 1.0 on RedHat Enterprise Linux 3.0 and whenever
there is a web link in a mail message that exceeds some preset length, it
is wrapped to a new line and the continuity of the line is broken making
the link useless.  I have played around with the message display options,
but nothing I try seems to work. There seems to be lots of space in my 
preview pane and I only need it to display about 20 more characters.
Can anybody help?
