Apologies for replying to my own post...

Enabling XUL cache works fine, here (restarted twice, just to make 
sure). However, I am seeing this in the JS console on the first button 
click (toolbar) in the prefs panel:

    Warning:  reference to undefined property Components.classes[contractid]
    Source (line 116): chrome://global/content/autocomplete.xml

Unrelated? Seems odd to me...
