If you’re scripting the authoring process, why bother going through a
GUI front end at all?

All I can suggest is, try producing cut-down test versions of one of
your DVDs, to see if they fare any better. As a starting point, just do
half the days in the month. If that doesn’t help, try halving some other
number instead.

The player itself should not be “widescreen” or “narrowscreen”—unless
the player no longer has the option to output to a narrowscreen TV.
