Hi,

I have had the same error, after looking inside the config.log I have 
found that the problem is not curl, but other libs that are missing.

So, open your config.log, search "curl", look at the error message, 
install the missing lib, re-run ./configure, if the problem still exist 
redo the previous operations. In my case, two libs are missing: popt and 
gnome-keyring.
