cdparanoia flawless but grip does not see cdrom

hello,

coud anybody help me out ? this must be an easy one:

cdparanoia works like a charm (see below) but for the life of it i can not get ANY other program on my box to even recognize audio cds. most straightforward i thought should be grip, since it also uses cdparanoia. but it gives me:

   No disc was detected in your drive ...

dvds play just fine with vlcplayer, too ... what am i missing ???

i assume something with scsi emulation. but where to put what in the configuration menu ???
