cannot play cd in grip

Hi, I am running grip 3.2.0 version 17 on FreeBSD 7.

I've been using grip for years on FreeBSD, have never had
any problems ripping songs from cd's and playing the cd's,
great software. Now I can rip songs but cannot play them,
am stumped.

I've checked the volume on my OS and my speakers. I can
use other players to play the same cd from my cd burner
(which is /dev/acd1 on my PC) with sound. I've tried different
cd's. I've rebuilt grip from the ports collection of FreeBSD,
removed the .grip and .grip-lame files, tried running it
as root and my normal user.

The permissions on /dev/acd1 are

crwxrwxrwx  1 root  operator    0,  93 Jun 26 23:33 /dev/acd1

Is there a way I can debug grip to see what might be causing
the problem? Here is my .grip file:
