Or if you're really wacky and you're blending video streams, putting
your talking face over a certain background?

It seems to me to have much more potential applications (abuses?)
than just a playlist.

I thought I read somewhere that the quicktime motto was to never
copy data. never. That meant doing exactly this type of linking
to sections (not the entirety of the file), and even being able
to edit the section you have linked in, all without producing
redundant data. That is a solution that can scale. Can you imagine
the chagrin of a user who wants to copy an hour of video into a
different file if it worked any other way?

qt also has an option to flatten movies, you can export a fully self
contained file, usually for such purposes as emailing or CDs.
