If the bot recognized your e-mail address, your post was immediately approved. If your e-mail address was new, it would send a confirmation e-mail (with a unique random code) that you had to reply to. The vast majority of spam is (a) automated with no human attention and (b) has an invalid return address, so the technique was very effective.
