how much memory does your system have left (physically) for running an 
application before you start OpenOffice.org ?

Maybe you system needs more memory.

If there isn't enough memory then the system uses the hard disk to swap. 
Be aware that a hard disk is much slower than a memory module.

Did you hear about http://www.rule-project.org/ which is maintained by 
Marco Fioretti ?
