FreeSans also work well.

Just a wild guess, parenthesis are Latin and text is Hebrew. Might be
unneeded LRM code?

Same in Ubuntu/Kubuntu, both in ubuntu packages and in the installer
from openoffice.org.
Not in Windows (even with Culmus for windows)
