Just for reference, I wrote this old post:

The following are important:
    $Self->{'Customer::AuthModule::LDAP::UID'} = 'uid';
    $Self->{'Customer::AuthModule::LDAP::UserAttr'} = 'UID';

You can change these to mail if you want to try differently.
