Thanks, Ron!  Your other remarks re assumed risk were also quite right.

Any other experiences on managing test data sets other than manually are 
welcome, if anybody else is interested in this.

OK. I tend to create example tables directly from data about the real world 
and work out logic based on what the workflow is.  Hmmm. Maybe if I worked 
on logic first using only variables, I might arrive at different 
conclusions about the data structures later.
