I recently read 'Clean Code' by Robert Martin et al, but I wouldn't
call it a "must read". It's focused on Java, not just generally clean
code and, even when I agreed with a guideline, I didn't find the examples
compelling. My 2 cents.

I also just read 'Masterminds of Programming', which is a collection
of interviews with language designers. I quite enjoyed it, though it
could use a little editorial cleanup--wording that didn't make sense,
or Q&A converstations that didn't flow quite right. Even so, if you
like languages, I can recommend it. I enjoy learning about the thought
process behind things, and there were a number of stories I wasn't
familiar with.

Neither of those were world-view changing for me. I would have to go
back a bit to see what the last one was that affected me greatly.

In the novel realm, I quite enjoyed 'A madman dreams of Turing
machines'. Not a happy story though. 'Hackers and Painters' is a fun
read, though you can read most of the essays on his site as well.
