ALS Victim with a Remote Tractor Toy

I'm a new member here and I was hoping I could get some advice. My father is a victim of ALS. The disease started in his toes/feet and is slowly moving up his body. Currently he can't move his legs except if they are swinging in the air (they must be lifted up by his hands). His hand strength is lessening (currently his hardest squeeze is like a ladies handshake). Every day his strength weakens as the disease moves up his body. There are 1:1000000 cases, but the prognosis for this disease is death. I have been working in the computer programming, motion control, and electronics design field for the past 11 years. I would like to build an interface for a Siku remote control tractor toy for him. He LOVES John Deere! I have the toy and I'd like to adapt it to some technique of EEG control. I like the way the people at ambient with the Audeo use the sensors near the vocal cords. Am I on the right track here? I am thinking I should order some sensors, the SMD box, and jump in. My idea was to try and use sensors on fingers to brute force control the tractor and move on to a more complicated setup involving the throat or scalp later when his fingers stop working. He will loose dexterity and strength in his fingers but still be able to control them. Eventually the fingers and even swallowing will be uncontrollable... The only thing I'm not sure of in this project is everything related to the EEG. Nothing else is a technology risk for me.
