It could have been worse. For example, at my prior residence, I had Earthlink DSL; and on some days it would disconnect 20+ times, yet sometimes it would remain up for days. Then, our house got hit by lightning -- I think it went through my satellite dish, into my DirecTivo, out of the DirecTivo's modem into the DSL modem, and finally into the Red NIC of my SmoothWall. Needless to say, my satellite multi-switch, DirectTivo, DSL modem, Red NIC (and PCI slot) were all fried. On the positive side, it appeared that the spike made it all the way to the DSLAM in the CO (I was reported to be <2,500 feet away). After they got the service restored, my disconnects disappeared. Who knows what would have happened to someone who had their PC or laptop plugged directly into their DSL modem. On top of all the usual reasons, I am very thankful for my SmoothWall -- it took the hit instead of everything behind it. And believe it or not, I am still using the same box, except with a different NIC for the Red interface. -Adam _______________________________________________ gpl mailing list [email protected] http://lists.smoothwall.org/mailman/listinfo/gpl SmoothWall Stash - Buy Our Stuff! http://cafepress.com/smoothwall
