At one time I had a couple of dozen IPCop boxes running but I'm down
to just two now.  It won't be long before they're replaced.  Although
the two remaining boxes are v1.4 vintage and so they're still running
kernel 2.4.21 I have no particular worries about their security.  It's
probably best if I don't go too deeply into the reasons for that, but
I never allow any remote connections, so there's nothing to attack on
the public Internet-facing ports, and more importantly there are many,
many more significant worries on the networks that they protect - for
example Windows users with (shall we say) browsing habits about which
I can do absolutely nothing.  Customers.

For my own business I'm happily running 'fli4l', although I can't say
that I would recommend it for a beginner to networking and security.
It handles my IPv6 requirements and runs just fine on one of the Alix
boards with a flash card.  One of my remaining IPCops is running on
flash too, but it wasn't exactly straight out of the box.

Until today I had never heard of it.  I looked at the Sourceforge link
and I didn't see IPv6 mentioned anywhere, although it was only a quick
visit.  I looked at the Website itself but I don't speak Portuguese so
it wasn't much help to me.

My advice would be to guard against what people in the UK usually call
'galloping development'.  I think I can see signs of it in what you've
published already.  Hopefully you'll find this advice as valuable as I
believe it to be.
