This is excellent! My only concern would be for those platforms that 
don't ship star by default (I know, they are getting fewer each day; I 
am thinking the likes of Solaris). I guess it wouldn't be that hard to 
make star a requirement for hdup.

For me, its not an issue. But for others, it might be.
