I would add to this list the problem that sparse files don't get stored
properly in the archive, and you see errors on restore.  For those of us
running RedHat or Fedora, it means that you can't get a trustworthy
backup of the RPM database, which is bad.  This was discussed on the
list some time back, but we never found a good solution; like the
directory issue, it's really tar's fault.
