No, this did not fix the problem.  Dirtying the file in Word (add and 
delete a space) and saving it allows Panther TextEdit to read the file 
properly, though.  I've stared at the rtf code in vi, but Word puts so 
much extra garbage in there, I don't know what to look at.

If I look at latex2rtf/test/fonts.rtf in TextEdit, some of the 
bold/italic commands work, and some don't.  All of the text is sans 
serif, though; once again, dirtying/saving in Word allows TextEdit to 
read the file with no problems.  If a PDF file of the TextEdit view 
would help, I can send one.

I notice this because I'm working to add RTF preview/export to BibDesk 
<http://bibdesk.sourceforge.net/>, using latex2rtf.  Drawing an 
NSAttributedString in a text view only gets some of the formatting, and 
I see the same problem with TextEdit.
