For what it's worth, I've temporarily solved my problem by changing
preamble.c:916 from
fprintRTF("\\widowctrl\\qj\\ftnbj\\n")
to
fprintRTF("\\widowctrl\\qj\\ftnbj\\f6\n")
where \f6 corresponds to Times (the name "Times" in fonts.cfg works
fine with TextEdit on Panther). \textsf still works when I do this,
but I'm not sure if it breaks anything else.
