Dear Ulrike,
you are spot on - but i believe our posts crossed!

The error complaint came towards the very end. The difficulty with context was that the installation logfile wasn't presented to me, even when I checked 'Show logfile'.

Before uninstalling (see other post), I could try running pdflatex etc., but only after navigating to InstallRoot\miktex\bin. And since I've barely heard of fc-cache before, it was less than obvious to me that my installation was still fixable - I'd have to establish a PATH variable somehow, wouldn't I?

Thanks a lot once again for your patient and careful replies!
As I wrote in the post crossing your answer, I ended up installing anew with UserData
in C:\temp\miktex29 . Not very elegant, I admit, but somehow the TEMP folder seems well suited as a permanent solution (oh, the irony) ;-) I have already scratched my and my admins heads for too many days already :)

Best regards,
