what is the reason for the "gui framework" error?

i use miktex 2.9, i set it to ask me before installing stuff on the fly (because i want to see when that happens). that works perfectly when i call pdflatex manually. it does not however when techniccenter calls pdflatex. this is a well known problem (pdflatex.exe reports "GUI framework cannot be initialized"), and i have not found a solution yet (disabling the asking or doing the installs beforehand are no solutions). i also have not found an explanation or reason for that. why would it be a problem for an application to open a gui if it was called by another application instead of manually? who is "at fault"? pdflatex or the editor? regards, peter ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ For Developers, A Lot Can Happen In A Second.
