MikTeX fails to download the listings package

I spent a few hours today trying to work out why MikTeX fails to download the listings package. I am using miktex portable version 2.9.2.9.4535 which I downloaded on Wednesday 7 Aug 2013.

I'm not the only person getting this problem as a quick Google search found this question on the tex stackexchange site: http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/126514/miktex-fails-to-download-the-listings-package

It appears that the package exists in all the repositories but has a .tar.lzma extension instead of a .tar.bz2 extension.

I updated the listings entry in the mpm.ini file to specify type as TarLzma instead ofTarBzip2 and the problem was solved.

I don't know where this data initially comes from but I guess that someone needs to update this in the miktex distribution if they haven't already done so.
