problem with latest upgrades | clean install | missing .dll

I received a email from a colleague who claimed they could install 
MikTeX at all. They had trouble articulating the issues they were 
having, so...decided to see if I could replicate

So, I took my test machine, wiped out MikTeX, and tried a fresh install. 
32-bit flavour, Win 7 Pro machine, single-user install.

step 1\ Installer seemed to run fine, to completion. No errors.

step 2\ opened up package manager, and re-synched the database

step 3\ installed miktex-mpmcli-bin-2.9 from the package manager. No 
errors reported.

step 4\ fired up the GUI-based update utility -- successfully found all 
the 'major updates' that came out a few days ago. All of them were 
selected by default, so simply hit 'OK'.

Alas, this is where the problem my colleague reported showed up. Right 
at the end, I got an error:

'The operation failed for some reason' -- details pointed to initexmf.exe

When I looked at the log, it reported:

initexmf --update-fndb --verbose:

Error: The operation failed for some reason.


So, seeing fndb in the message, decided to see if any of the utilities 
work. nada -- they all complain that MSVCP120.dll is missing.


Now, I know that this .dll is part of the Visual C++ redistributable 
packages for Visual Studio, so I'm guessing that the latest updates are 
using newer C/C++ conventions, that require this particular .dll.

So, downloaded the Visual C++ redistributable installer from MS, and 
installed it. The .dll is now on the machine. But, in a system folder.

Tried everything again. Again, no luck.

Then, it occurred to me to look at older, working MikTeX installs. 
msvcp100.dll is in the miktex\bin directory, so dragged a copy of 
msvcp120.dll into the miktex\bin subdirectory.

But, then I realized, 64-bit OS, 32-bit version of MikTeX (I was trying 
32-bit, since that is what my colleague used). So, start over...using 
64-bit MikTeX. All same steps.


Didn't work if I didn't put the .dll in miktex\bin, but did work if I 
did. So, in the end...success.



Summary: If you're installing from current installers (at least, the 
64-bit installer), you *might* need to get a copy of MSVCP120.dll 
(available on lots of websites), and throw it into the miktex\bin 
subidrectory *before* you do the upgrades. My suspicion is that 
something in the upgrade(s) needs this .dll.
