as an alternative to commercial unices and linux, it is perhaps worth
mentioning FreeBSD:

teTeX on FreeBSD is tends to be well maintained. It is easily
installed, either precompiled or from source:

 http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/ports.cgi?query=teTeX

while this platform does require a little more administrative
knowledge than many linux distros any competent unix admin shouldn't
have trouble installing and configuring it.
